Poetry Friday: A Curious Collection of Cats

A Curious Collection of Cats by Betsy Franco (Author) and Michael Wertz (Illustrator) is a collection of 34 concrete poems about cats.
It’s hard to TYPE a poem that’s a shape!
Luckily, Betsy has this example on her webpage…

Word Choice Mini-lesson
Primary/Intermediate: Ask students to write their own concrete poem about an animal. The topic of the poem will help them decide which shape works best. Use the Describing Chart graphic organizer to create a list of words to use.

Thanks for rounding up, Anastasia! Happy Friday!
Thanks for hosting today. I’ve been away from P.F. for awhile; it’s good to be back.

I’m in with a teaching story about the power of poetry.
Love the cat poem!
Thanks for hosting today, and have a great weekend!
Thanks for rounding up, Anastasia! I just heard Betsy Franco speak at IRA, and this is one of the poems she shared.
Thanks for hosting, Anastasia. My students are writing odes to their shoes this week, so I’m sharing “My Shoes” by Charles Simic and a Poetry Foundation article about shoe poems.
This looks like such a fun poetry book! We love cats over here. Thanks for doing the round up!
Two thumbs (or, rather, four paws) up for your choice. Hurrah for cats!
Mister Linky isn’t loading for me.
I’ve posted Falling Slowly at Bildungsroman.
I’ve just discovered Barbara Crooker. http://yatyeechong.blogspot.com/

Anastasia,
Thanks so much for doing the roundup this week!
At Wild Rose Reader, I have an extensive post about color poems that includes an original color poem submitted by one of my blog readers; links to children’s original color poems at Check It Out; color poems by Christina Rossetti, Marge Piercy, and Paul Zimmer; reviews of books with poems about colors; and a classroom connection for a creative writing and photography activity that teachers could do with their students.
I posted a poem about cats too. I love the illustrations in that book, I have to get a copy. Thanks for hosting the round up – I’ve not done this in a while!
In honor of Mother’s Day, here’s the second prize winner in the Fire Escape’s 2008 Poetry Contest: A Mother’s Burden.
Don’t forget to spread the word to teens that the deadline for the 2009 contests is June 1st!

I have only seen this book from a distance – I definitely want to get my hands on it!
Thank you for hosting.
I’m late but thank you for the round-up.
I found your blog on google and read a few of your other posts. I just added you to my Google News Reader. Keep up the good work. Look forward to reading more from you in the future.
